Summary:

Shoe Repair - Create a Shoe Ad in this Introductory Photoshop Project

    ●  Students design and market their own brand of fashion footwear in this introductory Adobe Photoshop project.  They design a shoe and create a magazine advertisement around it.  This project teaches students the design fundamental of Shape by requiring students to think about where they place the objects, images, and text that are required in the ad. Shapes must be used to direct the viewer's’ eye through the ad.

    ●   Sketch your ideas first, including a Logo, Slogan, "Call to Action," etc. and then finalize your Ad on the Computer.

Can Magazine Ads be Art?

Yes! Magazine ads can be art. Here's why …

  •   Art is designed to do basically 3 things: make you feel, think or do something, right? Advertising is the same way - designed to make you feel, think and BUY something.

  •  Designing an Ad cuts quickly to the root of this basic artistic endeavor, and students easily understand the motivation behind the Artist's desire to influence somebody.

What makes good Art?

  •   The Elements and Principles of Design are the most objective way to analyze Art.

  •   They can be difficult to understand, however. Framing the Elements and Principles of Design in terms of their effectiveness in making you want to BUY something makes them more useful and tangible.

Does it work?

  •   Did it make you feel, think or want to do something?

  •   What better way to begin a discussion about the impact of visual imagery and it's effects on consumerism culture.

  •   Students learn layout and design concepts, PhotoShop computer skills and how powerful - yet subliminal - the use of visual manipulation by advertisers is.

The Project Happens in 3 Parts:

Part #1: Sketch Your Layout ~

Design Always Begins with Paper and Pencil!

  •   Grab a pencil and do some basic sketches of your ideas using the Shoe Ad Sketch. Include a Name, Slogan, Logo and "Call to Action," Color, Everything!

shoe-sketch-drawing.png

  •   View examples of sketches here.

  •   SLOGO - You need a Slogan and a Logo, or "Slogo," something unique you create yourself.

Part #2: Move to the Computer ~

Scan your Drawing with your Slogan and Logo

  •   Open your scan in Photoshop.

shoe-sketch-drawing.png

  •   Or, copy a Shoe off the Internet - or both - whatever you need to get a prototype started.

  •   Then begin outlining your work with the Photoshop tools that you will be introduced to during the course of this project.

  •   Develop proficiency using Digital Art & Design tools & terms.

Last Part: The Final Product ~

Render your Images with Software

  •   All your work must be an original creation!

 •   If you trace copied images from the internet they must be modified by at least 90%, meaning that the color, size and name should be changed to be unrecognizable from the original content.

  •   Present your work to the class!

    •     ALWAYS save your projects using the following naming convention:
FIRST_NAME_LAST_NAME_PROJECT_NAME

    •     DO NOT name your project any other way - Improperly named projects will not receive credit and you will be sad.

    •     NEVER leave your work on the desktop or depend on a flash drive - instead, save your work in a folder you can find later - preferably on a virtual drive where it can be backed up.
