The Project Happens in 3 Parts:

Part #1: Sketch Your Ideas ~

Design Always Begins with Paper and Pencil!

  •   Grab a paper and pencil and sketch several examples - both front and back.

  •   Here are some example sketches.

  •  Most of the world’s currency uses the following types of images to promote their identity:

Patriots – Heroes – Warriors –- Battles – Famous Politicians – Portraits of Historical People from the Past or Present

Flora and Fauna – Unique Plants and Animals  – National Parks – State Flowers – Indigenous People or Animals.

No copyrighted cartoon characters, no celebrities (unless they are associated with patriotism, i.e. John Wayne).

  •  Begin researching iconic images that represent the country, and also try these other sources of inspiration:

Architecture – Famous buildings – Landmarks – Landscapes – Monuments – Geographical Features - Official Seals – Mottos – Shields – Cornucopias – National Symbols and Seals – Allegorical references from myth or legend – Famous Sports Legends – Flags

Part #2: Move to the Computer ~

Scan your Sketch into the Computer

  •   Scan your drawing and open it in Illustrator to start your prototype.

  •   Then begin outlining your work with the tools that you will be introduced to during the course of this project.

Last Part: The Final Product ~

Render your Images with Software

  •   All your work must be an original creation!

  •   If you trace copied images from the internet they must be modified by at least 90%, meaning that the color, size and name should be changed to be unrecognizable from the original content.

You will be judged on:

Tone: Money is Power and Stability –

  •   Your design should communicate authority, order, trust and stability.  Your composition should be balanced and stable.

diamond-star-shape-example.png

Typography, Text and Numbers must be clear, distinguished looking and easy to read –

  •   Typography is very important!  Choose your text and font with care.

Color! You can only use a Maximum of 5 Monochromatic Pastel Colors –

  •  Colors should be bold, but not intimidating.

Motto: Choose a patriotic slogan which reflects national philosophy and pride.

  • Latin on one side and English the other.

Symbolism: You must have at least 4 symbols, maximum of 6, on both sides, front and back of your currency –

  •  Symbols must have balanced allegorical representations – for instance, if you have an aggressive symbol on 1 side, have peace on the other, strength vs. compassion, industry vs. nature, work vs. recreation, etc.

  •   Present your work to the class!

Present your work to the class!

  •   The themes of this project are Unity, Balance and Shape.

  •  When an artist attempts to group many disparate images together - like in a collage - the challenge is to balance that potential chaos with visual order.

  •   It's a similar story with Balance. It is very easy to see how a completed composition gets "weighted" by imagery size and darkness.

  •   One way to reduce confusion is by surrounding a collage with a frame of some sort, thus uniting the composition and providing a convenient introduction to the principle.

  •   Also, Shapes: X, O, Triangle, Square - Use Shapes to help focus the viewer's eye to the focal point of your composition.

   •   In your presentations, talk about the Renaissance, what you learned about its history and impact on civilization.

   •   Also talk about how you used shape, unity and balance in your composition. Review this Presentation on the importance of shapes in your work.
