Step #1: Open Your Project in Illustrator ~

Open YOUR PROJECT from this tutorial in Illustrator



… (Remember: all these tutorials are intended to be
applied to YOUR PROJECT) …

… make a New Layer, and lock lock your other layers.

Step #2: Lasso Around your Face ~

Find an image from one of the following categories:

ArchitectureFamous buildingsLandmarksLandscapesMonumentsGeographical FeaturesOfficial SealsMottosShieldsNational Symbols and Seals – Famous Sports Legends – Flags – Historical Icons – Military Heroes - Important Battles - Political Figures – Portraits of People from the Past or Present – Flora and Fauna – Unique Plants and Animals  – Places to See - State FlowersIndigenous American Indians

Copy the image and paste into your document.

Step #3: Transform the Shape ~

Get the Free Transform Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (e) …

… and holding the Shift (⇧) key squeeze the image to fit your composition.

Step #4: Image Trace ~

With the image selected, go to: Window > Image Trace and click Preview …

Step #5: Grayscale ~

In the Tracing Options Control panel, turn on Preview and locate Mode.


Choose Grayscale


Step #6: Adjustments ~

Click on "Advanced" and raise the Paths and Corners - but not TOO MUCH.

Step #7: Expand ~

Now, with the Selection Tool select the image, and click on the Expand button or go to: Object > Expand

Step #8: Ellipse Tool ~

Get the Ellipse Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (L) …

… and draw an Ellipse shape over your image.

Use the Free Transform Tool to make it fit.

Step #9: Select Both Shapes ~

Shift-Click both objects to select them at the same time …

… then Right-Click and select Make Clipping Mask.

Step #10: Feathering ~

Then go to: Effect > Stylize > Feather, hit preview …

… and set the Feather Radius to your preference.

Last Step: Save and Attach ~

Go to: File > Save as … and save your work as an .ai document.

  •   ALWAYS save your projects using the following naming convention:

  •   DO NOT name your project any other way - Improperly named projects will not receive credit and you will be sad.

  •   NEVER leave your work on the desktop or depend on a flash drive - instead, save your work in a folder you can find later - preferably on a virtual drive where it can be backed up.
