Step #1: Open Your Project in Illustrator ~

Open YOUR PROJECT in Illustrator …

… if you're working on a
Picture Perfect Portrait
Project
in Illustrator, open that …



… OR if you need a background for your
Comic Book Project, open that …

… (Remember: all these tutorials are intended to be
applied to YOUR PROJECT) …


… whatever project you're working on, create a New Layer, and lock your other layers.

 If you absolutely don't have an Illustrator project, open a new Print Document in Illustrator.


Step #2: Polygon Tool ~

Select the Polygon Tool which is behind the Rectangle Tool …

… click somewhere on the artboard …

… and enter the settings shown:

Which gives you an equilateral triangle on the ArtBoard.

Step #3: Transform Scale ~

Go to: Object > Transform > Scale with these approximate settings:


Step #4: Snap to Point ~

This step is not mandatory, but it does make things easier. Go to: View > Snap to Point. Now whenever you click somewhere on the screen, the click will end up right on top of the nearest point in the image.

Step #5: Selection Tool ~

Get the Selection Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (v) …

… and select the shape.


Step #6: Rotation Point ~

Now, get the Rotate Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (r) …

… and click at the top point of the triangle to set the rotation point.


Step #7: Alt (⌥) Key ~

Hold the Alt (⌥) key, and drag your triangle over.


Step #8: Repeat ~

Hit the keyboard shortcut: Cmd(⌘)+D to duplicate your last action to copy the triangle all the way around.


Step #9: Stretch the Group ~

Get the Selection Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (v) …

… hit the keyboard shortcut: Cmd(⌘)+A to select all of the triangles, grab one of the corner handles and drag it outward to expand the sunburst to fill your artboard.

Step #10: Colors ~

Click the Swatches icon or go to: Window > Swatches

… grab the top, "tear off" the panel and place it somewhere.

Drag a Swatch color to fill each shape.


Step #11: Rotate Again ~

Select all the the triangles with the keyboard shortcut: Cmd(⌘)+A

… get the Rotate Tool again …

… reset the center of the triangle shapes …

… holding the Alt (⌥) key again, rotate the shape.

Step #12: Backgrounds and Colors ~

Add more colors, gradients and other designs to make your work unique.

Step #13: Filter ~

With ALL the Shapes selected, go to: Effect > Blur > Radial Blur and select Zoom …

… and blur the background.


Step #14: Clipping Mask ~

Get the Rectangle Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (m) …

… drag a box the same size as your artboard.


Step #15: Selection Tool ~

Get the Selection Tool or hit the keyboard shortcut letter (v) …

Step #16: Select Both Shapes ~

Select both shapes by Shift + Clicking them.


Step #17: Clipping Mask ~

Right-Click and select "Make Clipping Mask."

Clipping Masks hide the extra from your artboard area.


Last Steps: Save and Attach ~

STOP HERE - step #18 is ONLY if you are working in Photoshop. Otherwise, save your work as an .ai document now.

 

Step #18: Move to Photoshop (if necessary) ~

Save your Illustrator document …

… open your portrait in Photoshop

… go to: File > Place

… and hit OK.

Drag the new layer behind your portrait.


Last Step: Save Your Project & Attach ~

Go to: File > Save as … and save your work as - FIRST_NAME_LAST_NAME_PROJECT_NAME]

Attach it and keep working …
